Review: Seagate Backup Plus External Hard Drive

It has come to an age where external hard drives are common. But what makes an external hard drive better than the others? Introducing the Seagate Backup Plus, the latest from Seagate External Hard Disk product line. The mention external hard drive enables simple files backup experience, hence the name.

With the Seagate Backup Plus, you have the option not only to back up the files on your computer, but also the files on your social networks such as Facebook and Flickr within a few simple steps, via Seagate Dashboard. Apart from the, Seagate is also offering cloud storage up to 4GB free for 1 year.

In this review, we will cover the functionalities of this portable drive. As always, we will perform some benchmarks to see how fast this drive performs.

The Testbed

The portable drive is connected via ASRock Z77E-ITX USB 3.0 port.

Functionalities

We tested some of the features of this portable hard drive. Using the Seagate Dashboard Software provided.

The Seagate Dashboard installer is provided inside the portable HDD.

Here is the Seagate Dashboard interface. As we you can see, there are three things that we can do here. We will go through every options.

Protect

The main purpose of the Seagate Backup Plus is to backup your files. Here we can see that the drive can protect your files with one click and the user may also create a backup plan.

After clicking the protect now, the portable drive will back up your hard drive.

When the process is done, there will be an update notice to show when the last back up was done.

You can also create a custom backup plan. Here you can select which files you want to back up.

After the settings has been selected, you can use that new plan to back up your hard drive.

Share

For the Share mode, there are three options. Seagate Dashboard supports Facebook, flickr and YouTube. We will test the Facebook option.

The button will take you to a web browser, in which you will need to enter your login details.

You will need to allow the Seagate Dashboard plugin in your Facebook to enable it to work.

After all that, you can proceed to use the share feature on the Seagate.

Proceed to select the picture to upload.

After selecting the picture, give the album a name and comment. Click on the tick to proceed.

The Seagate Dashboard will upload the picture.

This is how the Album looks like on your Facebook.

The Seagate Dashboard automatically detects if you have added new pictures.


The Dashboard let’s you to download the latest files from your social network.

Conclusion

The Seagate Backup Plus is a really good external device. It combines data storage and also automated backup device. The interface was really simple and easy to learn. Also, the social network plugin serves as a great tool.
